Welcome to the Family Education/ Support Department of Lee Health

Birth is a natural part of life, but the experience sometimes can make new and expecting parents feel unprepared or overwhelmed.

The Family Education/Support Department of Lee Health offers personalized and family-centered care to prepare parents for the birth of a child.

Mother-infant bonding is a vital part of the birth experience, and breastfeeding is strongly encouraged. Our board certified lactation consultants and certified breast-feeding counselors are available at three locations:

Cape Coral Hospital

Gulf Coast Medical Center

HealthPark Medical Center

Classes should be finished 3-4 weeks prior to your due date.

Childbirth Preparation:

Understand the birthing process, choices in obstetrics, birthing fundamentals, breathing, relaxation, Cesarean preparation, breastfeeding fundamentals, and mother/baby care.

Childbirth Preparation classes are conducted by nurses nationally certified by the International Childbirth Education Association.

Lee Health offers two different childbirth preparation education programs.

1. eLearning Childbirth Preparation Program with Tour. Our e-Learning course includes access to an online program and a tour of the birthing facility for you and your support person at Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center, or HealthPark Medical Center. The eLearning course provides a great foundation and the tour familiarizes you with the hospital where you will give birth.

The eLearning program is completed at your own pace. The tour is offered on Tuesdays at Cape Coral Hospital, Thursdays at HealthPark Medical Center and Wednesdays at Gulf Coast Medical Center. All tours begin at 6:00 pm.

The AAP states that "human milk and breastfeeding of infants provide advantages with regard to general health, growth and development, while significantly decreasing risk for a large number of acute and chronic diseases."

Our certified breastfeeding counselors and board-certified lactation consultants assist mothers to become more comfortable with feeding their infants. New moms are encouraged to ask about how to:

  • Know your baby is getting enough milk
  • Determine that breastfeeding is going well
  • Return to work and continue breastfeeding

Getting Help:

Recognizing that breastfeeding is normal, desirable and achievable, our lactation consultants provide education, help and support for nursing mothers throughout Lee and surrounding counties. Our certified breastfeeding counselors provide 24 hour support to breastfeeding mothers at the bedside. Our consultants make rounds and offer assistance to breastfeeding moms who have additional concerns. The staff works closely with you and your physician to assure a team approach to your care.

All of our lactation consultants are board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). The IBLCE examination is the leading, internationally recognized measure of competence in lactation consulting. There are more than 12,000 IBLCE certified lactation consultants in the country.

Milk Depots

We are pleased to announce the opening of two Milk Depots at Lee Health!

Babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) depend on this life saving nourishment to thrive when their mother’s milk is not available. Donor milk is used by preemies and older babies who cannot tolerate formula, have a weakened immune system, or have special dietary needs. Every drop of breast milk makes a difference in the long-term survival and outcome of a sick baby. Please consider donating your extra milk! Your breast milk can make a positive impact and benefit a baby for a lifetime.

Lee Health has two depots (drop off locations) for the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) milk banks. Please call to set up an appointment for drop-off of milk.
