Swimming your Way to Health: January 26, 2017

Each year thousands of people move to Southwest Florida to enjoy the water, but if you haven’t mastered the breathing or the technique of swimming, it can be challenging. A new class is helping adults become more comfortable and confident in the water.

Emily Withington, an exercise specialist at the Wellness Center Cape Coral, says she hopes the new workout will help participants develop technique and safety skills in the water. “It’s called add water to your workout. It’s based on getting people to swim in the pool that don’t usually swim in the pool for exercise.”

The new class helps participants build endurance in the water while teaching them the correct form and breathing techniques. “The reason for the class is to teach them technique to swim more efficiently in the pool and to get their breathing down,” said Withington.

Swimming helps maintain a healthy body weight, heart, and lungs. Withington’s goal is to work with each swimmer to teach them water safety and form. “It’s a good cross training. A lot of people come in here and they do the same workouts every day so we want to give them something else they can do.”

The class can also help those with joint or muscle pain. “It’s anybody who’s willing to swim some laps and increase their endurance,” said Withington.

While the immediate goal is up to each individual, the ultimate goal is to improve their overall health and water safety.
