National Nutrition Month: March 13, 2019

It’s an annual campaign that keeps you focused on your food. “The campaign was mostly made to make sure that consumers can make informed food choices and that they are knowledgeable about the foods they are choosing to eat,” explained Noel Konken, a clinical dietitian with Lee Health.

National Nutrition Month is celebrated every March and was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the 1970s. The goal is to remind people to eat foods that will nourish their bodies.

“Mindfulness and being an intuitive eater is definitely a big movement in the nutrition world,” said Konken. It’s important to take your time when eating and be mindful about what you’re eating. “When we are eating more mindfully, taking our time with eating, and focusing on nourishing our bodies, looking at more of a sustainable and healthy lifestyle plan through eating and also through moving and daily physical exercise,” said Konken. Being more mindful about what you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat, can help to improve your health.

“It is important to just eat balanced meals every day of the week. Fueling your body with energy throughout the day is going to provide you with that extra boost of energy,” Konken said. Snacks and meals that incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein can keep your body nourished and energized throughout the day. “A good healthy snack to give you energy throughout the day would be a snack that incorporates not only sugar or a carbohydrate but also mixing that with a source of protein,” she said.

A month to focus on your nutrition can help you develop healthier eating habits throughout the year.
