Lee Health Awards More Than $269,000 in Educational Grants

Grants Will Help 172 Individuals Meet Their Educational and Professional Goals

(Fort Myers, Fla. – Aug. 9, 2017) --- Each year, Lee Health awards educational grants and scholarships to employees, volunteers, family members and local residents who are interested in pursuing a career in a health-related profession. This year, $269,250 will help 172 individuals meet their educational and professional goals. Teresa Smith and Yvonne Medvecky are two of this year’s recipients.

Smith is a clinical educator with Lee Physician Group and she is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). “I have worked for Lee Health for 10 years, and I have always been amazed at how supportive leadership is of continuing education,” she says. “I cannot thank everyone enough for the financial assistance, but also for always encouraging us to go farther—whether that is with accreditations, certifications or educational degrees.”

Medvecky agrees, as she has received financial assistance throughout her educational journey.

Six years ago, Medvecky started working in registration in the emergency department at Lee Memorial Hospital. When she decided to go to nursing school, she applied for and received financial assistance through the education grants. She earned her associates degree and began working as an ED nurse at Cape Coral Hospital. This spring she will graduate with her BSN. “Lee Health has been behind me throughout my education and now my career,” Medvecky says. “The system helped me through my prereqs, my associates and now my bachelor’s degree. I plan to continue on the same path of ED nursing and hope to go back to school again to earn my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).”

The educational grants are provided by the Cape Coral Hospital Auxiliary, Gulf Coast Medical Center Auxiliary and Lee Memorial Auxiliary. The Lee Health Foundation also provides grants through donor support, including:

  • Eloise M. Carlson Education Endowment Fund
  • Madeleine R. Taeni Nursing Education Fund
  • Edward and Gale McBride Education Scholarship Fund
  • Jim Nathan Endowment Fund
  • Nathan Family Educational Excellence Fund
  • Robert and Frances Feuchter Endowment for Nursing and Healthcare Education Scholarship Fund
  • Ellen McDonald Endowed Pediatric Nursing Scholarship Fund

“Having the means to pursue educational degrees is challenging for many,” says Larry Antonucci, M.D., MBA, Lee Health President & CEO. “Through the education grant program, and the tremendous support from long-time volunteers, physicians, community, board and auxiliary leaders, philanthropists and community advocates, education and career goals are attainable and achieved. Health care is constantly changing, and new technologies and techniques continue to emerge, so a well-educated workforce is vital to our success—both in our day-to-day operations and in attracting and retaining the best and brightest health professionals.”
