Jan. 4 Open House Set for New Skilled Nursing Unit at Lee Memorial Hospital
Lee Health Program Accredited with Commendation
(Fort Myers – Dec. 28, 2016) – Tours of the new 18-bed skilled nursing unit at Lee Memorial Hospital will be available during a public open house Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., and from 4-6 p.m. The new unit offers patients a quick transition from hospital to skilled care within the same building, and will increase access to hospital beds in the community through timely discharges.
Most people go home after a hospital stay, but sometimes recovery is slower than expected and further care is needed – though not necessarily the same level of care. This usually means a transfer from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility. With the opening of the new skilled nursing unit at Lee Memorial Hospital, patients will only need to make a short trip down the hall, not down the road. The unit offers assistance with everyday tasks in addition to some of the most extensive care available.
With a shortage of skilled nursing beds in our community at various times of the year, “The new skilled nursing unit at Lee Memorial will enhance patient care and improve our system-wide bed capacity efforts ” says Scott Kashman, Chief Acute Care Officer, Lee Health. “With the patient remaining in the same facility, we can closely manage the patient’s care and transitions and help the patient reach the highest functioning level possible before discharge.”
An interdisciplinary team of medical professionals will develop an individualized care transition plan for each patient admitted to the skilled nursing unit. Whether recovering from surgery, stroke, an orthopedic procedure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) each patient will be assisted with rehabilitation needs to help them to return to the community. As the date of discharge approaches, and if appropriate, the team can complete a home evaluation to ensure a safe transition to the next level of care.
The new unit features a therapy gym, open seven days a week, to ensure therapy continues as planned throughout the stay, as well as a dining room, which promotes an atmosphere for social interaction. Other amenities of the unit include: Wireless internet in all rooms, computer workstation, expanded visiting hours, on-demand dining, and access to the gift and coffee shop areas within the hospital.
In addition to the new 18-bed unit, Lee Health operates 112 skilled nursing beds at HealthPark Care & Rehabilitation Center in Fort Myers.
