Autism Spectrum Disorder Screenings Support, Empower Families

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that, in 2024, about 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Early diagnosis and behavioral intervention, such as behavior therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy, can significantly impact young children and their families.
To help local families concerned about their child experiencing difficulty with communication and social skills or exhibiting repetitive and restrictive behaviors, which are possible signs of autism spectrum disorder, Golisano Children’s Hospital partners with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida to offer free monthly screenings. The autism screenings are available for children 18 months to 5 years of age.
Advanced practice registered nurses with extensive training and experience in child development and developmental disorders administer the screenings, and a physician referral for the screening is not required.
The free screenings are held each month at locations throughout our community. The next screening will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102 in Fort Myers. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.
The screening program enables our Golisano Children’s Hospital team members to partner with parents and children to ensure the right and best diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.
