Bumps, bruises, cuts and scrapes are typical injuries for children learning, growing and exploring their world. Unfortunately, serious, unintentional injuries – like suffocation, drowning, motor vehicle crashes and other preventable injures – are a real threat, too, and a leading cause of disability and death for children ages 1 to 18. Because many of these injuries are preventable, teams at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and the Trauma Center are on a mission to raise awareness and provide education to families throughout our community.

Child advocates at Golisano Children’s Hospital provide education through community classes, one-on-one sessions, family events and health fairs and at our patients’ bedsides. The Child Advocacy page on Lee Health’s website (www.LeeHealth.org/our-services/child-advocacy) is also a great resource, providing information and tips regarding ATV and sports, bike and pedestrian, child passenger, fall prevention, gun, medication, swimming and boating safety, safe sleeping for infants and more. Golisano Children’s Hospital also is the lead agency for Safe Kids Southwest Florida, which is a coalition of Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization dedicated to protecting children from unintentional injuries.

The Lee Health Trauma Center offers a variety of informative programs aimed at youth violence prevention; injury prevention; drugs, drinking and driving; senior safety; and sports injury prevention. These programs are all designed to assist our community with the awareness and knowledge to make positive choices and live safer lives.

“Education is key to prevention, and prevention matters,” says Sally Kreuscher, Lee Health’s community affairs programs coordinator. Syndi Bultman, Trauma Center injury prevention and resource coordinator, agrees. “We always adapt our messages and approach to the audience – whether a group of kindergarteners, teens or senior citizens – so the information and examples are age-appropriate and relevant,” she says. “We don’t want to scare people; we just want to make them aware. We want our messages to stick, so crashes, traumatic injuries and deaths can be avoided.”

This year, on Nov. 18, Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Lee County Trauma District are joining forces with Safe States and Safe Kids to raise awareness on National Injury Prevention Day. This is the second annual event and the Lee Health team’s first time participating. This recognition day is meant to raise awareness of the burden of injury, violence and the need for change. Our team will be sharing practical tips and prevention education throughout the day via social media. Follow along at www.Facebook.com/GolisanoChildrensHospitalofSoutwhestFlorida.

In addition to the education and awareness campaign, Lee Health, government and businesses (locally and across the country) are shining green lights on their buildings, monuments and thoroughfares once the sun sets to show support for injury prevention.

We appreciate the Golisano Children’s Hospital and Trauma Center teams who are so dedicated to educating and empowering families throughout our community to stay safe and prevent injuries. We also appreciate the support from our local partners joining us on Nov. 18 to shine a light on injury prevention.
