Did you know that, on average, men in the United States die five years earlier than women and die at higher rates from the three leading causes of death – heart disease, cancer and unintentional injuries? That’s the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, a survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic revealed that 40% of men only go to the doctor when they think they have a serious medical condition; only three out of five men get annual physicals and more than half of men said their health isn’t something they talk about.

These are compelling data that illustrate the need for Men’s Health Month, which is held each June, and is meant to raise awareness of preventable health conditions and encourages early detection and treatment of diseases.

As president & CEO of our community’s major destination for health care, I want to take the opportunity to remind the men of Southwest Florida to take care of their health.

Embrace habits, like eating a healthy diet and exercising, drinking alcohol in moderation and quitting smoking. Other healthy habits include taking a more proactive approach to your health by scheduling annual physicals with your primary care provider and staying on top of screening tests like those for cancer, blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, mental health conditions and more. Your doctor will discuss with you the screening tests you need based on your age, lifestyle and medical history.

If you do not have a primary care provider and need a doctor, find one that you connect with and who makes you feel comfortable to open up honestly with – that is vital to taking care of yourself and any health issues that may arise. Lee Health is home to Lee Physician Group and many caring, compassionate doctors, advanced practice registered nurses and other specialty providers who can help you create and sustain habits that will keep you healthy.
