We typically see seasonal viruses, like flu, COVID-19 and RSV, during this part of the year. This year, however, there is a fourth illness in the mix. Norovirus (the stomach flu) is also circulating, and at levels public health officials haven’t seen in years. Symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, body aches, stomach pain and vomiting. There isn’t a medication to treat norovirus, but it is critical to drink plenty of liquids to avoid exacerbations like dehydration.
During this so-called “quad-demic,” Lee Health and hospitals and health systems across the country are experiencing an influx of patients. Because of the highly contagious nature of these viruses, I wanted to remind you of the various ways to keep yourselves and your families healthy.
The first (and most basic) tip, is to wash your hands, scrubbing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Remember that germs are everywhere and can transfer from doorknobs, tables, grocery carts, toys and other objects, so wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently throughout the day.
Next, you may want to wear a mask while out in public. At Lee Health, we are strongly encouraging our staff to wear masks during this time of increased viral illnesses in our community. We are also encouraging visitors to wear masks, and we are supplying them at the front entrances of our facilities. Visitors may also choose to wear their own properly fitting cloth mask if they prefer.
Getting vaccinated is another way to keep yourself and others safe. Though we can’t vaccinate against all the viruses, you can choose to get the flu and COVID-19 vaccines. If you are an older adult or pregnant, you may want to consider getting the RSV vaccine, too. Be sure to discuss vaccination with your doctor or healthcare provider.
Finally, stay home if you are sick so you don’t spread germs to others. If you need medical attention, Lee Health is here to help, providing you with the care you need in ways that are convenient and safe for you, including in-person and virtual care options. To figure out the right place to get the care you need, visit www.LeeHealth.org/get-care to learn more about the venues for care and to take advantage of a symptom checker that will help guide you to the right place.
