Biography

Dr. Figge's journey into healthcare started when his father suffered a heart attack while he was in high school. Dr. Figge then developed a passion for biology and other sciences in his high school and college years. His college professors were very supportive and helped focus his interests, leading to an undergraduate research project at Mayo Clinic. When Dr. Figge attended Harvard Medical School, he wanted to apply his knowledge to make pioneering discoveries in medicine and to provide exceptional healthcare experiences for his patients by offering them cutting-edge diagnostic methods and treatments. This passion has guided Dr. Figge's journey throughout his career.

He is very passionate about endocrinology because this field provides him the opportunity to apply the latest scientific knowledge to yield a positive impact on the health of his patients and to improve the quality of their lives. The last decade in endocrinology has been fascinating, with significant advances in diagnosing and treating diabetes and thyroid conditions.

Dr. Figge was drawn to Southwest Florida because he attended medical meetings in the region, and his family vacationed here on several occasions. Dr. Figge is constantly amazed by the area's ambiance and enjoys meeting people in the community.

Meet the Doctor

Hello, I'm Dr. James Figge. I'm an endocrinologist at Lee Health. I grew up in Minnesota, and then I did my medical training in Boston. I did my internship residency and fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and then I worked for many years in upstate New York in the Albany, New York area. I've been a practicing endocrinologist there for about 30-some years, and then we decided that it was time to look at another place. We were very interested in coming to Southwest Florida because in the past we had taken all of our kids here on vacations. We wanted to settle in a place where ultimately we might like to retire, but in the meantime, since I didn't really want to retire, I wanted to keep working. We thought Lee Health was a great place to join, and I'm very happy that we've joined Lee Health. My pathway to endocrinology was somewhat personal. When I was in high school, my father had a heart attack and ultimately passed. That did leave a big impression on me, and as I became more and more interested in medicine in college, I decided to look into a career where I might be able to help people reduce their risk of cardiac disease. I learned a lot about diabetes and endocrinology in college, and then I went to medical school and learned a lot more about it, and I realized that a lot of the problems with cardiovascular disease are actually metabolic, and diabetes for sure is one of the major risk factors for cardiac disease, so is high cholesterol. I became interested in this area, and I've done a lot of work in diabetes prevention, I've done a lot of work in thyroid disease, and now we can apply a lot of the things that we know about metabolism to helping people prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. It came in a big circle from when I was very young to where we are right now. I've always liked water sports. I like to scuba dive and I like to swim, and so that's another reason I came here to southwest Florida, because I can do those things year-round. In upstate New York and Minnesota, it gets a little cold to scuba dive and swim. Then I like to play tennis, and one of the things I want to learn down here is pickleball. So I have never played pickleball before, but my son, who's a veterinarian, tells me it's great. My wife actually took it up, and so I'm planning to learn pickleball as well.

Dr Figge spends plenty of time with his patients is concerned with his patient’s well-being is very knowledgeable in his field. His staff also cares about the patients while being very much.
