My professional focus is on you. As your surgeon, my goal is to guide you through treatment and return you to your family safely with your best possible quantity and quality of life. We will achieve this goal together by reviewing your diagnostic tests, discussing your condition, and then matching the best treatment option to your particular need. As my patient, I am motivated to provide you the safest, least invasive and most effective heart and lung surgical treatments available anywhere. With over twenty years of learning in cardiothoracic surgery, I have become proficient at robotic pulmonary lobectomy, robotic coronary artery revascularization, minimally invasive right chest valvular heart surgery, and catheter-based treatments such as TAVR and TEVAR. I have committed myself to these procedures because I have learned their value in improving your outcome by conveying the least possible physical impact to your body.
Although I remain the leader, I believe in the power of the team over that of the one. Therefore, I have helped develop, and am part of, expert teams at Health Park Hospital. These teams are comprised of doctors, nurses, and other allied support members in cardiology, pulmonology, intensive care, anesthesia, hematology/oncology, rehabilitation and many others that are designed to ensure your safety and enable your best possible treatment outcome. The focus is always on you, and the goal is to return you healthy and safe back to your family and your life.

Dr. DeFrain was raised the youngest of five children in East Lansing, Michigan. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1994 and graduated from Wayne State Medical School in Detroit, Michigan in 1998. He completed general surgery training through Michigan State University in Grand Rapids in 2003, and his cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency through the University of Texas at the Texas Heart Institute and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in 2005. He and his wife Stephanie have four children.
Dr. DeFrain is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
In 2023, Palm Beach Media Group recognized Dr. DeFrain as one of Southwest Florida’s top doctors from Lee Physician Group.
