What is the APP Adult Critical Care Fellowship?

The Lee Health Adult Critical Care Medicine NP/PA APP Fellowship is a one-year training program for fully licensed and certified PAs and NPs. Our program is unique in that it combines a highly detailed competency-based curriculum with hands-on learning in the clinical setting. Through didactic and hands-on modalities, the APP fellow will be provided with specialty training in the expert management of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit setting.

What is the curriculum for the APP Critical Care Fellowship?

Fellowship experiences include, but are not limited to: 

• Surgical patients — Fellows are expected to extend their knowledge of general post-operative care, surgical complications, and acute post op pain management, as well as further their understanding of ventilator and vasopressor support. 
• Medical patients — The fellow will gain knowledge and experience with acute internal medical diagnoses and treatments. Fellows are expected to maximize their knowledge base about ventilatory modalities, inotropic/vasopressor support, antimicrobial therapy, and nutritional requirements for the critically ill patient.
• Neurological/Neurosurgical patients — The fellow will gain knowledge on various neurological impairments including management of cerebrovascular accident, seizures, intracerebral hemorrhages, as well as post-operative care of the neurosurgical patient. 

What elective rotations are offered to APP critical care fellows?

• Trauma/Surgical ICU
• Operating Room
• Neuro-interventional laboratory
• Radiology
• Emergency Department   

Fellow responsibilities will include:

• Attendance on daily team rounds and be proficient in the presentation of assigned patients
• Providing clinical services for critically ill patients with multi-system disease
• Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing
• Developing and implementing treatment plans for critical illness
• Performing necessary procedures with supervision
• Participation in professional development through curriculum, development, research and continuing education opportunities

What are the time requirements for the APP Critical Care Fellowship?

The time requirement for the APP Adult Critical Care Fellowship is rigorous. Each fellow is responsible for a minimum of 60 hours per week devoted to training. Work hours may be split between rotation, on-site training, reading, modules, conferences and research activities. Each fellow is expected to work the schedule set by their mentor(s). Schedules will vary and consist of days, evening, nights, weekends and holidays.
