A New Heart Procedure for Patients - Cardiothoracic Surgery

It’s a new life saving heart procedure that’s now being offered at Lee Health. Health experts say the minimally invasive procedure, called Mitra Clip allows patients to get back to their normal lives within a few days.Dr. Brian Hummel, a cardiothoracic surgeon with Lee Health, says patients who qualify for the procedure have heart failure or valve ruptures. It’s a problem that can develop suddenly or over a period of time. “The patient becomes short of breath when they try to exert themselves. If one of the cords ruptures the patient may suddenly develop symptoms. They were fine playing tennis one day, the next day they’re in serious difficulty.”He says Mitra Clip is a great solution for patients who qualify. “A common problem for valves is the mitral valve begins to leak and it can be for a variety of reasons,” said Dr. Hummel. When that happens, traditionally surgeons would replace the valve surgically to stop the leak. But Mitra Clip makes the repair easier and less invasive for the patient, going through the groin instead of the chest cavity to get to the heart valve. “We pass a catheter up through the vein and then poke a hole in the wall that separates the upper chambers. You then put a guide catheter in through that and you slide a clip mechanism down, and then you try to capture the two leaflets as they’re moving and clip them together and solve the problem,” said Dr. Hummel.Once the clip is placed, it limits the blood flow from the leaking valve offering many benefits to the patient. “They’re going to feel better. They’re going to breathe better,” said Dr. Hummel.Patients are typically able to go home 36 hours after the procedure.View More Health Matters video segments at Health in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of health care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
