Each year nearly 800,000 patients suffer a stroke. Dr. Nasser Razack, a neuro-interventional radiologist with Lee Health, says more than half of patients who suffer a stroke never realized they were at risk. “Unfortunately, the incidence of stroke is way too high and the incidence related to stroke is way too high.”
Doctors say strokes can be prevented. “It’s very, very important to try to improve your diet, try to eat more fruits and vegetables in your diet, and try to go more and more vegan every day,” said Dr. Razack.
Doctors say strokes are caused by inflammation, which is heavily caused by our diet. Incorporating things like fiber and omega 3s, like flax seed, walnuts, and spinach, into our diet daily can help lower inflammation. “Omega 3fatty acids are the fats that make up the cells in your body. They are most concentrated in your brain. Research has shown that the higher the concentration of the fats in our cells, particularly our brain, the less risk of brain-related disease,” said Dr. Razack.
Antioxidants, like coffee for example, and plant-based foods can also help lower your risk for a stroke. “Plant-based food products allow the mitochondria in our cells to burn more fat,” said Dr. Razack.
Too much excess fat can also lead to a stroke. “Fat is not just a passive tissue in the body. It’s an active substance which means it secretes things that are bad for us. It secretes things that lead to cancer, lead to heart disease, and lead to stroke. We don’t want that in our system,” said Dr. Razack.
High blood pressure is another risk factor. Doctors recommend flax seed every day to help lower blood pressure. But incorporating these ingredients into your daily diet can help lower your risk for a stroke and improve your overall health.
