Eat This, Not That - Nutrition

While many of us try to eat healthy, with so many options, it can be hard to know what food is good for us and what isn’t. Erika Graziani, a dietitian with Lee Health, says when it comes to eating healthy there are certain foods that are obviously on the ‘do not eat’ list. “Foods that maybe you shouldn’t have every day are, what I call, special occasion foods. Think like your cakes, your brownies, your homemade desserts.”But other foods aren’t so obvious. “Foods that I feel, for the best health, we should really try to avoid are processed meats, such as your hot dogs, bacon, deli meats, fried foods, egg yolks, and cheese, and I know everybody loves cheese, but if we can cut back on how much you’re doing that’s going to be an improvement,” said Graziani.Taking out the foods that aren’t benefitting your health means there’s more room for foods that will benefit your health. “Things that you should try to eat everyday if you can: greens, specifically leafy greens, nuts and seeds, beans, and berries,” said Graziani.Your leafy green vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals and can benefit your eye health. Foods like broccoli and cauliflower can also benefit your health and help prevent cancer. “Beans are an easy source of protein. They are cheap. They’re versatile,” said Graziani.Berries are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Eating strawberries or blueberries every day can help protect your heart and keep your blood sugars even. “Nuts are high in different nutrients. They contain different fats. They are heart healthy. They also contain plant sterols that can actually help lower cholesterol.
