Emergency Care for Children - Pediatrics

Whether it’s a late night illness or an early morning injury, anytime your child needs emergency care it’s important to know where to go. Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida has its own emergency department specifically for children 18 and under. “It’s the first ER in our community designed and built specifically for children,” said Armando Llechu, Golisano Children’s Services chief administrative officer. “The equipment, the supplies, everything that we used in the design were about distraction, comfort and easing the anxiety for patients as we care for them.” Golisano Children’s Hospital saw a great need to design emergency care just for children. Thousands of children have already received treatment here. “Most ED’s see patients based on acuity and typically the conditions that pediatric patients present with are really of a lower acuity. So in many other ED’s those patients end up waiting the longest and have the least amount of contact time with providers once they get there,” said Llechu. But when children are brought to Golisano Children’s Hospital they are quickly seen by a pediatric emergency specialist. “Typically you are seeing a provider of some sort within three minutes of arrival and have seen a physician within 22 minutes of arriving to our ER,” said Llechu. If a child needs to see a specialist when they arrive Golisano Children’s Hospital is equipped and staffed to take care of their medical needs. “We have pediatric surgeons, pediatric anesthesia. We’ve got basically all the key pediatric subspecialties that we need. Very few of our patients are transferred out of the area,” said Llechu. And because any hospital experience can be scary for children and parents health experts have designed a friendly environment with games, pet therapy, even an interactive wall to help distract and entertain families. All to offer quick and expert treatment for children who need emergency care.
