When you need immediate medical attention you can either go to the emergency department or to a walk-in medical clinic.
“Generally we tell people to go to the emergency department for things like chest pain, anything that’s concerning the heart. Any kind of stroke like symptoms, weakness or numbness on one arm, one leg, difficulty speech those kinds of things,” said Dr. Karen Calkins, Associate Medical Director for Convenient Care at Lee Health.
But if a patient has non-life threatening illnesses, like bronchitis or sinus infections, or has minor injuries, they can come to a walk- in medical clinic. “We have one kind of close to all to our hospitals now in the area and it kind of helps people who don’t actually need to been seen in the emergency department get seen quicker, treated faster,” said Dr. Calkins.
A walk-in medical clinic is ideal for sprains, cuts, sore throats, or work related injuries. The newest location is off of Metro Parkway just feet away from Gulf Coast Medical Center. “It will service all urgent care type injuries and try to help off load the emergency department at Gulf Coast across the street,” said Dr. Calkins.
Patients who need blood work or x-rays can have those done here as well. “Broken bones, we will treat as long as they are not through the skin. We will x-ray those, splint those, lacerations we can also treat those,” said Dr. Calkins.
All walk-in medical clinics are open seven days a week and are a great option for adults and children to receive prompt medical care. “It will help people get seen faster and treated faster,” said Dr. Calkins.
