Lessening the Anxiety of Breast Cancer - Oncology

It’s a program that’s giving patients a voice in their cancer care. The Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic is changing the way patients receive their cancer treatment.Tammy Zinn, a nurse navigator with Lee Health, says the multidisciplinary clinic is a one on one conversation between the physician and patient. “When the patient is newly diagnosed with breast cancer they can come through our clinic. One visit and you meet your team. You meet a surgeon, a medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist.”The Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic is a team approach to breast cancer care. It makes sure everyone involved with the patient is on the same page. The one day meeting is available to any patient with breast cancer.Patients like Lynn Lawrence, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, say the program gave her a better understanding of what her treatment would entail. “I was very thankful and happy to be able to meet with them and be a part of the process. It was absolutely worthwhile because it was a more personal approach.”The goal of the one-day meeting is to gather all the patient’s physicians in one room to explain exactly what can be expected. “It’s very patient centered, so the patient gets to be part of the decision making on what goes on with their care,” said Zinn.Patients discuss the treatment options with their physicians to form the best treatment plan. “Being a part of the process helps gain more self-worth and lessens anxiety,” said Zinn. After the patient leaves, the physicians work together to make sure the patient’s treatment plan is understood by everyone caring for the patient. “We have a roundtable discussing, it’s called a tumor board, and their case is discussed and everybody agrees on their plan of care,” said Zinn. The discussion gives the patient confidence about their treatment plan.View More Health Matters video segments at Health in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of health care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
