New Technology Improves Surgery - Obstetrics and Gynecology

New technologies like minimally invasive surgeries are changing the way patients experience surgery and recovery.Working through robotic arms, surgeons like Dr. Kevin Fleishman, an OB/GYN on the medical staff of Lee Health, are able to perform surgery from across the room. “A laparoscopic surgery with robot assist is very helpful because it gives you 3D, high definition vision, seven ranges of motion, and makes us able to do more complicated surgeries in minimally invasive way.”HealthPark Medical Center is the first hospital to house the da Vinci XI robot. “It has several advantages over the prior platform. One is the 3D, the high definition is much more accurate, the bed actually is blue tooth connected to the robot arms, so you can move them in synchrony which is better for the patient,” said Dr. Fleishman.Hysterectomies are just one of many types of procedures the da Vinci XI can do. Surgeons are also able to do general surgeries like hernia repairs, cardiac surgeries, and colorectal surgeries. “There’s much less pain, much less requirement for pain medications, much quicker return for a much more normal daily living,” said Dr. Fleishman.Patients who qualify for a robotic hysterectomy are typically those who had vaginal births, as opposed to those who had multiple C-sections or abdominal surgeries. “The advantage is much less recovery. You’re only in the hospital less than 24 hours with most da Vinci hysterectomies verses three to four days. Often, patients are going back to work after the first week if their work does not involve heavy lifting, verses six weeks,” said Dr. Fleishman. After a 30 minute minimally invasive procedure, patients are left with one small incision in the belly button.View More Health Matters video segments at Health in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of health care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
