Preventing Kidney Stones - Urology

It can be a painful diagnosis. Kidney stones are a collection of solute like calcium, oxalate, or uric acid that builds up in the kidney.“The most common symptoms of kidney stones are pain in the top part of your back that might shoot down your side into your groin. They form in kind of these pockets called the calyces, which if your kidney is like a hand it’s in these pockets here and when the form here they can fall down into the kidney and then fall into the ureter, said Dr. Scott Caesar, a urologic surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health. The most common cause for kidney stones is dehydration. But doctors say depending on what the stone is made of, kidney stones could also be caused by things like too much red meat, chocolate, or peanut butter. “Whenever a urologist gets a stone either through surgery or the person passes the stone, you usually send it off the first time to a lab and they can get a look at it to see what it’s made of,” said Dr. Caesar. That determination will identify what the patient needs to add or subtract from their diet.“The number one thing I tell my patients is to drink more water. That prevents them. But based on what they’re made of you can also take some supplements,” said Dr. Caesar.Adding lemon juice to water can also help balance the PH in the urine and prevent kidney stones.“The most common reason you get more than one is by having one. If you have one kidney stone that’s the most important factor to show that you will have more kidney stones,” said Dr. Caesar.Kidney stones can grow larger than 3 centimeters-- that’s roughly the size of the tip of your finger. It’s a painful diagnosis that can be prevented with a healthy diet and plenty of water.View More Health Matters video segments at Health in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of health care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
