Project Hope - Oncology

Jayne Magee was living in Cleveland when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. During her treatment, she underwent 36 rounds of radiation. “You feel less beautiful. You feel disfigured.” Her son Galen, who works in fashion, sent his mom a kimono to wear every time she went for radiation. “When she would call me and tell me how much it helped her is when I really started to understand, oh that’s really great for that need. She would tell me how it would make the treatments easier,” said Galen Magee. Inspired by his mom’s journey, today Galen has partnered with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to make robes for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. He’s named the project: Jayne’s Robe, after his mom who is now a breast cancer survivor. “It definitely helps with the self-esteem for sure. When you have the robe you have the love,” said Jayne. Each patient at Lee Health diagnosed with breast cancer receives a Project Hope bag from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and now, one of Jayne’s Robes will be added to the bag. “The Project Hope bags really are just that. It gives them hope. Inside that bag is a lot of love,” said Tammy Zinn, a nurse navigator with Lee Health. The bags are filled with breast cancer information, as well as handmade items made by breast cancer survivors like shawls, pillows, and now, Jayne’s robes. “We started with wanting to make things that were beautiful that didn’t really feel like a hospital gown. I wanted to give a sense of beauty and a sense of feeling special,” said Galen. Every item in the Project Hope bag is designed to help and encourage women undergoing breast cancer treatment—while making sure they still feel beautiful during their journey.
