Recovering after an Injury - Physical Therapy

David Yannatone was cleaning windows at his house one afternoon when he fell off a 12 foot ladder, breaking both elbows. During his recovery, physical therapist Brandi Redman used kinesio tape to help speed along his recovery.“I was attempting to do a good deed in my house by cleaning a window that was about ten to 11 feet in the air. When I got to the top, the bottom of the ladder slid out so I rode the ladder down,” said David. After undergoing surgery, he spent months in physical therapy. “He had a significant amount of swelling within his arm and Dr. Leach wanted him to move his arm and keep the active range of motion and active movement going,” said Redman. She started using kinesio tape to reduce the swelling in David’s arms. “The tape, it has swirls in the adhesive, and the swirls lift the top layer of skin which allow for a low pressure zone and that allows for the body to create channels that channel the lymph and the fluids within the swelling to be pulled out of there which decreases the swelling.”The tape can be used for a variety of reason. Patients with injuries, swelling, edema, even bruising can use the tape to reduce pain and swelling and help them move forward with their physical therapy. “You can tell a difference. With David we could see the difference in obviously the bruising,” said Redman.Without the tape, David’s therapy would have been delayed until the swelling went down. “We would have had to rely on more traditional methods of elevating the arm, laying with your hand above your head for long periods of time, ace bandages, those kinds of things,” said Redman.David still has physical therapy to help build strength and mobility in both arms. “It’s been a long journey but when you see progress you continue to look to the end and keep your eye on the goal, which is full range of motion,” said David.A goal physical therapy aims to help him achieve.View More Health Matters video segments at Health in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of health care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
