Therapy Helps Patients Recover from Knee Surgery - Physical Therapy

After an injury or a surgery, relearning how to do daily things can be challenging. After Kathy Rice underwent a knee replacement surgery and back surgery, she had to relearn how to stand, sit, and walk. “For a long time I was really frightened. I had lost my balance. I just wasn’t sure how much I could do anymore and it was a little depressing.” Kathy went to physical therapy twice a week for three months. “It was very intense, it was very difficult, it was hard, but they got me through it. Then that following summer I had back surgery and when I came for recovery I came back here,” she said. Physical therapist Raymond Halstead worked with Kathy on relearning how to do daily tasks. “The emphasis of my examination is really emphasizing what it is they want to be able to do functionally? And then I aim my intervention at functional exercise.” During physical therapy Kathy would work on lunges and squats to help rebuild muscle around the knee. She was disciplined in her recovery, even practicing her physical therapy exercise at home for hours. “They really were very encouraging and kind and supportive. It made it a pleasant experience during a tough time. They really are like friends now,” said Kathy. Kathy is now back cooking, traveling, and walking without pain. “I’m able to do all the daily things of daily living. I can go shopping. I can actually walk through a store without a cart anymore, which I couldn’t do,” she said. Kathy says the exercises and quality of service paid off. Today, she returns to the outpatient rehabilitation center at HealthPark Commons not as a patient, but as a friend.
