Each year in the U.S. an estimated 350 children under the age of five die from drowning. From swimming pools to beaches, there are endless opportunities for a child to get hurt around water. Doctors say it’s a tragedy that can happen in just a few seconds.
Dr. Alex Daneshmand, a pediatric critical care physician with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, sees about 50 drowning a year at the Lee Health emergency department. “That’s almost two classrooms of kindergarteners that drown. In Southwest Florida we’re surrounded with bodies of water from lakes to swimming pools, all of them are areas where we could have our children drown, unfortunately.”
There are things adults can do to prevent a child from drowning. Doctors call is A-B-C. A-for adult supervision. B- for pool barriers. C-for CPR.
“One to four years of age is the most common age group that we lose to drowning. Kids one to five years of age they are very curious. They like bodies of water, they like pools, they’re attracted to that, so we just need to create barriers for them so that they are not easily able to get to that water without us being around,” said Dr. Daneshmand.
While swim lessons are important for children doctors say supervision is key. “You have to create a layer of protection. And these layers of protection are CPR, swim lessons, alarms, pool fences,” said Dr. Daneshmand.
He suggests always assigning one person to be the pool watcher while children are in the water. “We can protect these kids from drowning, and the only way we can do that is to be aware of it,” said Dr. Daneshmand.
Making sure children are watched and protected around the water is key to preventing a child drowning.
