“We’ve kind of intertwined our families. We’ve extended our families,” said Shawn Gay, as she described the unique relationship that has continued to flourish inside Golisano Children’s Hospital. “We thought we were close before, but this has really enhanced our relationship,” she said.
Elizabeth Couch is the foster mother to one-year-old Savannah—and Shawn Gay is Savannah’s biological grandmother. “She is just our gift. She gave us the opportunity to be Mimi and papa to our grandchild,” Gay said.
Baby Savannah was born prematurely at just 27 weeks at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Born with a long list of medical conditions, baby Savannah would need all the love and support she could get. Just days after her first birthday, she was readmitted to Golisano with chronic lung disease and respiratory issues.
“The care far supersedes anything, and I’ve lived all over the world and been in many hospitals in my lifetime and to me the professionalism and just the caring,” Couch said.
“They go above and beyond, and it’s not something they were taught in a classroom. It comes from their souls,” said Gay.
And while it’s unclear when Savannah will get to go home, the family says they’re grateful that such a little life could make such a big impact.
