Are you in Need of a Hip Replacement? - Orthopedics

Dr. Zach Stone, an orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health, says new techniques are making hip replacement surgery easier for patients. “When you talk about hip replacements in general, there are several different ways to do it. More traditional approaches have been from the side of the hip. In the last ten years, we’ve started another approach which moves the incision more to the front, and rather than splitting the muscles; we’re actually able to go between the muscles.” The new approach called anterior hip replacement allows surgeons to use live x-ray imaging throughout the procedure—ensuring everything looks exactly how it should be after surgery. “My goal is to do the right surgery for the right patient. I think an anterior approach is a valuable tool for surgeons and patients, in the patients who are appropriate candidates,” he said. Often times, patients who qualify for anterior hip replacements are up walking after surgery—and going home the same day. “Hip replacement surgery can be a big surgery, and certainly there are different things that may make it more complex, or in some people, it may make it more challenging than others. As a rule, we’ve actually gotten better over the years at both being able to get people going quicker after surgery and helping them have less pain,” explained Dr. Stone. While any surgery comes with risks, doctors are careful to choose the right technique and treatment approach to get patients quickly back on their feet.
