Bertec Balancing - Physical Therapy

Equipped with a giant screen and moving floors the Bertec Computerized Dynamic Posturography is designed to test patient’s balance. “We do use this early on in the diagnostic process because it does do a lot of diagnostic tests that really help us identify exactly where the balance issue is at, and it helps to guide the treatments that we do,” explained Julie Wise, a physical therapist with Lee Health. When patients step into the machine, physical therapists focus on testing different aspects of their balance, including their vision. “The dome that we have makes it so that we can control what the patient sees to better assess their balance. A lot of patients who are dizzy complain of motion sickness with things that are moving or with busy backgrounds, so we use that grocery store scene to kind of simulate a busy background that somebody would encounter in their daily life,” said Wise. Harnessed in for safety, the moving screen and platforms take patients through a series of balance tests. The results are then captured in the computer to help physical therapists determine the best form of treatment. “When we’re doing balance tests, the machine captures data based on how much the person is swaying and where the weight is moving. If they are somebody who has a weaker right side it would pick up that they are bearing more weight on the left side, then we know that there might be some weakness on the right and we need to train that right leg to be a little more efficient and a little more active to keep them balanced,” she said. At the end of the test, patients receive a score, showing them how their balance compares to people their age — giving guidance and answers to balance concerns.
