Blood Donations

It’s a need that Lee Health blood center supervisor Jeremy Puckett says increases in the summer months. “We definitely need it every single day. We are always low in the summer, but we pick back up for season.” The big green donor buses can be spotted throughout the community seven days a week. With school back in session, the buses can be often be found at Lee County schools. “One of our largest donor groups are those high schools out in the community so we will start to steadily pick back up throughout the year,” said Puckett. On average, Lee Health collects about 25,000 units of whole blood every year. Every 56 days, you can donate enough blood that will save up to two lives. “That’s the big push is you’re saving multiple lives in your community. The big thing is to have a ready blood supply. You need that blood supply there for those patients if you do have a mass casualty incident,” he said. The blood is collected and then separated into two components: the red cells and the plasma. Both can be used to benefit different patients with different needs. “You’ll come in, you’ll fill out your donor history questionnaire for us, we’ll do a mini-physical, and then we’ll get you into the donor bed, get you drawn, and the provide you with snacks and a gift, and out the door,” Puckett said. A small donation that can make a significant impact on patients in Lee County.
