Whether you’re spraying or scrubbing, health experts say it doesn’t matter how you clean—it matters what you’re using. “When we absorb or breathe in the chemicals, we do see an issue with the metabolism because we do metabolize them,” explained Julie Hill, an outpatient dietitian with Lee Health.
Certain cleaning products can be harmful to the body—and overtime even disrupts the endocrine system. “It’s going to affect different people in different ways, primarily it does affect the endocrine system, so when we talk about our hormone system, our thyroid, our pancreas, all of our hormones are significantly impacted by different chemicals,” she said.
She suggests shopping for products that are botanically-based. “We want to look for things that don’t have as many chemicals or looking for products that encourage natural ingredients,” Hill said.
More naturally-based products have also been tested to kill 99 percent of germs, just like other products on the shelf. “Vinegar is one of the best antimicrobial, antifungal products that we can use. It’s people-safe, it’s animal-safe,” she said.
Investing in your health now can lower your risk for health concerns later on.
