Don't Forget your Medicine - Pharmacy

Every year like clockwork, hurricane season rolls into town. While many years it can go unnoticed here in Southwest Florida, health experts say it’s always important to have a plan. “You don’t want to wait until June first to start preparing. It’s kind of like Christmas; it comes the same time every year. You want to start planning every single month,” said Susan Mitchelson, an ambulatory pharmacist with Lee Health. When it comes to your medications and prescriptions, it’s important to make sure you don’t run out. “When you’re getting your refills, refill them as soon as the insurance company lets you refill them, so you can kind of get a little stockpile of your medication throughout the year,” she said. That stockpile can ensure--you still get your medication in the worst case scenario. “A lot of times you have to expect that your pharmacies may not be open, they may not have normal operations, they may not be able to get their supplies because if it isn’t bad here, it doesn’t mean it’s not bad in other places in the state,” said Mitchelson. Make a list of all your medications, and include their name, strength, frequency, and the prescribing physician. This can be helpful if you lose or run out of medicine during a hurricane. “Have medications on hand to plan for the unexpected, such as injuries, you want to have pain medications, allergy medications, and all first aid supplies on hand,” she said. If your medication has to be kept cold, it’s important to have a place to keep it should you lose power. Planning ahead can keep you safe and prevent you from being without your necessary medication.
