Drowsy Driving - Trauma

It can happen in seconds. “A lot of us know that driving drowsy isn’t a good idea, but we have 30 percent of people saying that they do drive drowsy,” said Syndi Bultman, a trauma injury prevention and resource coordinator with Lee Health. Drowsy driving is a year-round problem. “Some have even said that they have even fallen asleep while they were behind the wheel at least once in their lifetime, and that’s extremely dangerous not only for the person behind the wheel but for everybody else that’s on that roadway,” she said. Studies show losing just a few hours of sleep each night actually doubles your chances of having a crash—which is why health experts encourage people to make sure they get a good night’s sleep before a road trip and don’t rely on caffeine to keep you awake. “If you start getting tired, don’t rely on just opening up those windows and turning the radio up louder, pull over somewhere, take a little nap if you need to, find a hotel to stay at, get the sleep and go the next morning,” Bultman advised. People who have been awake for 20 hours or longer are just as dangerous behind the wheel as someone who has a blood-alcohol level of .08. “Some people don’t even realize that they actually do micro-sleeping, and that’s where briefly for 4 to 5 seconds, they are not paying attention, and they have no idea what’s on the road in front of them,” she said. It’s important to make sure you get plenty of rest before driving and don’t rely on cruise control if you’re feeling drowsy.
