Exercise is Medicine - Wellness

Health experts say spending more time exercising can reduce your need for medication. “By incorporating exercise one can obtain positive health outcomes, such as lower blood pressure, control of diabetes and blood sugar, reduction of stress, anxiety, and depression, plus the many, many more benefits of exercise,” Said Michelle Hudson, a personal health advocate for Lee Health. Regular exercise can help prevent, treat, and even reverse the effects of chronic disease. “Just as you would take your medication regularly and as prescribed by your physician, one should regularly incorporate the daily dose of exercise,” said Hudson. The general recommendation for exercise is 150 minutes per week for healthy people. Regular physical activity can increase your good cholesterol, decrease your bad cholesterol, and help control blood sugar. “Not only is exercise medicine, but the food is medicine, and lifestyle is medicine. So some of the lifestyle changes you can make today are number one, exercise. Number two, eat a heart-healthy diet full of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, limit processed foods, and try your best to reduce stress,” she said. By improving your health naturally, you may no longer need certain medication. “It can reduce those stress hormones. It can also release positive stress hormones like endorphins. It will help reduce tension,” said Hudson. Developing and maintaining a consistent exercise program can lower your risk for chronic disease, cancer, even stress-related illnesses.
