Antone DeMello Jr. was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. “I was suffering from debilitating pain in my back. I was suffering from anxiety, and I wasn’t sleeping well, and I just wasn’t feeling well.”
So when he heard about a free six-week chronic disease workshop, he decided to sign up.
“Whenever you have a chronic health condition, it’s really a loss because you’ve lost your way of life that you knew before that chronic health condition. So we really help people with things such as how to manage difficult emotions that accompany any chronic health condition,” explained Sharon Krispinsky, chronic health program coordinator with Lee Health.
The class is designed to help participants living with a chronic disease like diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, cancer, and depression. “Many of these chronic health conditions are totally preventable by adopting a healthier lifestyle. In fact, by attending these workshops learning these tools, you can actually reverse many of these chronic health conditions,” said Krispinsky.
Focusing on exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management, the class teaches natural ways to improve your symptoms without relying on medication. “It’s fabulous! It’s over the top. I picked up some things from some of the people in there,” said DeMello.
Giving participants the support and tools they need to manage, and in some cases, overcome chronic disease.
