For Lee Health pain management Dr. Daren Subnaik, medication is not his first recommendation for patients living with chronic pain. “It’s very important when you are having chronic pain to realize that there are numerous other options available other than medications.”
From back pain to knee pain to neck pain—he advises patients to make lifestyle changes to help minimize the discomfort. “It’s important to take a whole-body approach where we try to emphasize lifestyle modifications, behavioral changes,” he said.
Things like diet changes, exercise, even meditation, can help patients better manage and improve their pain. “There are certain types of diets that can lead to worsening inflammation, so we try to emphasize certain diets like the Mediterranean diet, which can decrease inflammation,” said Dr. Subnaik.
Weight loss, movement, and daily exercises can help to improve joint pain and back pain. “Sometimes we even refer over to a dietitian so patients can learn a little more about carbs, fats and try to get the right proportion of those macronutrients,” he said.
Teaching patients how to improve their lifestyle through physical therapy, nutrition, and exercise can help them manage their pain without medication.
