It’s something we all experience. “There’s good stress, there’s chronic stress, which that’s the stress that continues to knock on your door, it’s always on your mind, it wakes you up in the middle of the night,” said Sarah Mitchell, a health and nutrition coach with Lee Health.
But health experts say many times we don’t realize the impact stress has on our bodies. “Awareness is key to stress. I think we become so easily familiar with saying, how are you today? And your response just comes back as ‘I’m stressed,’ and you don’t even know what you’re stressed about,” she said.
Unmanaged stress can cause high blood pressure, headaches, even body aches— Health and nutrition coach Sarah Mitchell works with people on how to address and manage their stress. “I think self-awareness is huge because then we can start to talk about self-care,” Mitchell said.
She recommends writing down all the things that cause you stress. “When they discover how many stressors they have in here, then we need to break it down to individual stressors, like what are you really ready to start to work on? It can be overwhelming. So to break it down to one healthy habit at a time, and that’s what we do in the coaching program,” said Mitchell.
The program helps people discover their stressors and create healthy ways to manage them. “And I think when you start to see the results, that’s when it really starts to trigger to you that that’s what was causing that pain,” she said.
Identifying your stress and finding healthy ways to keep it under control can help you feel better and improve your overall health.
