Improving Your Sleep can Improve Your Mental Health - Behavioral Health

Tossing, turning, and thinking—health experts say if this happens when you go to bed at night it may be time to change up your routine. “A lot of times we will tell people to find an unwinding time for you. You can’t just come home and instantly go to bed; you have to give time for your mind to unwind,” said Jayme Hodge, a behavioral health director with Lee Health. Many times worry, and excessive thinking can cause people to stay awake. “Then we start looking at some of those thought processes. Are you worried about things? Are you worried about not sleeping,” said Hodges. If this type of behavior becomes frequent, she recommends keeping a sleep diary and make a note every time you got to sleep and every time you wake up. If your thoughts are keeping you awake, write them down to get them out of your head. “If you feel like you’re getting frustrated by being awake in bed, get out of bed. Go sit down and watch TV for a little bit. Don’t turn on all the lights. Don’t start a two-hour movie and the minute you start to feel sleepy again go back to bed,” she suggested. And when it’s time to turn out the lights—it’s also important to turn off your electronics. “Too many people are married to their cell phones, and the problem is that they are lying in bed with the lights out and they have a cell phone right in front of your face, and that light can also have an impact,” said Hodges. All can help you get a better night’s sleep and help you to feel better the next day.
