Knowing How to Save Lives - Trauma Center

It’s a scenario you hope never happens. “We know that anybody who has life-threatening bleed can die within five minutes, and our average response times run about that as well,” said Captain Colin Johnson with Lee County Department of Public Safety. The Lee County Department of Public Safety is working with the Lee Health Trauma Center to teach people how to stop the bleed. “You make sure the scene is safe before you even to go near. We don’t want people to jeopardize themselves or cause more harm to the individual. We start off by applying pressure right over the wound right away,” explained Syndi Bultman, a trauma injury prevention and resource coordinator with Lee Health. Studies show over five million people in the world die every year from bleeding to death. If someone has an arterial bleed, they can die in less than three minutes. The Stop the Bleed campaign educates people on how to use basic items to save a life. “It’s a national initiative that really empowers the public and our first responders to get hands-on with bleeding control,” said Johnson. If people don’t have a first aid kit or a Stop the Bleed kit, things like shirts and belts can be used to stop the bleeding until EMS arrive. “When we do the training, we’re actually showing people what they should do and then we have them practice. This is what you do. This is how you protect yourself and your loved ones,” said Bultman. Knowledge and training that can save lives until medical professionals arrive.
