Knowing your Risk for Pre-Diabetes

One in ten people is living with the disease. The bad news is, you could be at risk and not even know it. “Having diabetes increases your risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney failure nerve damage, limb loss,” said Annette McClenahan, a diabetes coordinator with Lee Health.But before your blood sugars are high enough to become diabetes health experts say many people are living with prediabetes. “What’s really important about this stage is, if we work on certain lifestyle factors, such as weight loss and activity, you can actually reverse pre-diabetes or prevent it from advancing to type two diabetes,” she said.Patients are considered pre-diabetic if the A1C is between 5.7 and 6.4.
