It’s a common heart condition that affects millions of Americans. “Atrial fibrillation is probably our most common type of chronic arrhythmia that causes problems for a lot of our patients,” said Dr. Erick Burton, a cardiologist with Lee Health.
A-fib, short for atrial fibrillation, can cause symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. It can also increase a patient’s risk for a stroke.
“A lot of times the atrial fibrillation just hasn’t been recognized because it’s not compellingly obvious that it’s there, and so it’s really important for us to try to be able to identify those patients who are in atrial fibrillation so that we can help direct them towards therapy that will make them feel better and reduce their risk of having a complication,” said Dr. Burton. Which is why Lee Health’s Shipley Cardiothoracic Center and the Heart Vascular Institute are coming together to deliver a comprehensive program for the identification, treatment, and management of a-fib.
“We’re really going to be educating our physicians, so our primary care physicians and our cardiologists, and I think it’s going to be the inaugural use of the new education center that’s in the Shipley Cardiothoracic area,” he said. The education center has stadium seating that can hold about 50 people—using an interactive monitor and screen, physicians and health experts can experience state of the art education on a-fib, which they can then use to benefit the community.
“It’s a really big help if we can rapidly identify these patients, treat them quickly, and get them out of the hospital in the least amount of time possible,” Dr. Burton said. Collaborated education that helps physicians ensure patients get the best care possible for a-fib.
