Limiting your Sugar - Nutrition

It can be found in cereal, chips, even fruit. “A high sugar intake ultimately leads to weight gain and belly fat, but also the development of chronic disease like type two diabetes. It leads to a condition in the body called insulin resistance,” explained Carrie Bloemers, a registered dietitian with Lee Health. But when it comes to how much sugar you’re getting per day, many people may be surprised to learn they’re way over the limit. “Condiments are surprising. There’s a lot of added sugar,” she said. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 25 grams of sugar for women per day and 36 grams of sugar for men per day. “Mostly we’re looking at decreasing those added sugars, looking for foods that have more fiber content and then really going into the ingredient list and finding out what kind of sugar is that,” Bloemers said. And the new food labels are making that easier to find. “The new food label actually will bump out the added sugars to a food product, so it will differentiate between naturally occurring sugars and those added, maybe in the form of high fructose corn syrup or more harmful sugars to the food product,” she said. Naturally-occurring sugar can be found in fruit, which also has other health benefits like fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. Checking the label and limiting added sugars can lower your risk for obesity and chronic disease.
