Medical Alert - Emergency Services

“I’m not old enough for this, or I don’t need it,” is the most common reaction Lee Health’s emergency response system coordinator Lynn Dore hears when patients discuss wearing a medical alert button. “It’s better to have it before something happens,” said Dore. Things like falls, strokes, and heart attacks need immediate medical care—prolonging treatment can put patients at risk for a longer recovery, even death. “A lot of times, you don’t get help quickly, and you end up in the hospital and rehab for three months at a time, and most of the time they end up going to assisted living facilities,” said Dore. Whether it’s around their neck or on their wrist, the medical alert button is designed to keep people at home as they age. “If there’s a medical emergency or any kind of emergency, they can press their button and get help right away,” said Dore. Once they push the button, it takes the response center between 30 and 60 seconds to respond. If the patient is unresponsive, first responders are then called. “Family members really do like their loved ones having it. In an emergency it does contact their loved ones, so if they get transported to the hospital or if they stay home. We do call family members and let them know,” she said. The devices are also equipped with a fall sensor that is automatically triggered if a patient has a fall. Giving people peace of mind and helping them age safely at home.
