“Everybody hears that, and everybody’s ears perk up because they know what a code blue means and they know the weight that that code blue holds,” said Misty Teeter, PICU supervisor at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
At Golisano Children’s Hospital, code blue means a patient is in cardiac arrest. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first, second, or third nurse to respond—everyone has a job. “It’s literally just empowering the nurses to early recognition of what the patient is going through, early intervention, and just empowering them to know, when you arrive at the scene what’s your role? What’s your job,” she said.
It’s the life-saving question pediatric code prep is helping nurses answer. “This is a great way to get the basics down so that we are able to do the same practice. So it’s putting everybody at the same level, and then we can work ourselves up from there,” said Adrien Rochon, a registered nurse with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
Nurses at Golisano Children’s Hospital took guidelines from the American Heart Association and modified the standards to meet the needs of pediatric patients. “Early recognition of any situation is extremely important, and so in a cardiac arrest that family is depending on you to act to save their child,” said Teeter.
Nurses are asked to practice the code prep drills every three months to keep their skills proficient. “You start to forget things if you don’t practice. So that’s our goal with this code prep is to practice,” she said.
A new, modified program that allows nurses frequent practice of these life-saving skills.
