Recovering from a Concussion - Physical Therapy

It can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, even balance problems. “A concussion usually occurs because there’s an injury to the brain. There’s a mild traumatic brain injury, and it changes how the brain functions,” said Dawn Root, a physical therapist with Lee Health. But if left untreated, physical therapist Dawn Root says there are other symptoms that can last longer. “There can be sleep dysfunction, personality changes, there can be problems with thinking, where they are not processing as well, memory can be an issue, and there can be a lot of visual problems,” said Root. How long the symptoms last can depend on the severity of the concussion and the patient’s medical history. “The more concussions you’ve had, the probably the more symptoms you will have and the longer they will last. People that have a history of migraines may be more likely to have a longer history or headaches after a concussion. If there is a history of learning disabilities, they may be more likely to have cognitive symptoms lasting longer after the concussion,” she said. Because brain images often don’t show a concussion, addressing the symptoms is crucial to getting the patient the help and treatment they need. “Once we do a thorough evaluation, then depending upon where their deficits lie then we will work with therapy on improving those deficits,” Root said. Physical therapy exercises can help patients improve their balance, standing, and dizziness. Getting patients the help they need can improve their health and help them return to their normal routine.
