Repairing a Hernia - Vascular Surgery

Umbilical and incisional are just a few of the most common types of hernias. “There are many types of hernias and many types of repairs. The idea is to either do the repair with or without mesh,” said Dr. Moutaa BenMaamer, a general and vascular surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health. The size of the hernia along with the patient’s lifestyle will help the surgeon determine if the hernia can be repaired with or without mesh. “The repair with mesh, what’s good about it, is it gives you strength. The repair without mesh, what’s good about it, is you don’t have a foreign body, but the risk for the hernia to come back, usually it’s higher than when you don’t put mesh,” he explained. A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle. Patients who develop a hernia are at risk for it coming back even after surgery. “Usually, having the foreign body there will decrease the risk of a reoccurring hernia by 20 or 30 percent,” said Dr. BenMaamer. Things like genetics, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and improper exercises can put patients at risk for a hernia. “For an ingrown hernia, usually you have pain, and you have bulging where you can see it, especially when they become a good size. But if you have some concern or pain that lasts more than usual you should go and talk to your doctor,” he said. Surgery with or without mesh is important to avoid future complications. The sooner the hernia is repaired, the better.
