Safe Cleaning - Nutrition

You think you’re keeping your home clean—but health experts say this could be causing more harm than good. “When we look at the cleaning products that are aerosolized or something that becomes airborne, what happens is we do end up breathing it in, and then we also get it recirculated if it’s in the house, and then if we are physically touching it then we will also absorb all of those chemicals into our bodies as well,” explained Julie Hill, outpatient dietitian with Lee Health. Over time, absorbing chemicals can cause issues with the metabolism and endocrine system. “It takes up extra nutrients and also taxes our liver as well as out GI tract to try to get rid of all of those chemicals,” she said. While it can affect different people in different ways, health experts say over time, the chemicals in cleaning products can also change the hormone system, including the thyroid and pancreas. She recommends using gloves when you clean or choosing cleaning products that have few ingredients and are botanically-based. “There are a lot of companies that are using essential oils, which have things like lemon or different citrus-based items that are antimicrobial,” said Hill. Just a few changes can make a big difference to your overall health.
