Lights, decorations, and home-cooked meals. It’s that time of year when homes transform for the holidays. “As the holidays come closer, we want to remind families to make sure that our homes are safe,” said Sally Kreuscher, a child advocacy program coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
As the decorations go up the hazards can come out. “Ornaments are a great thing. They are shiny. The tree is shiny. We have tinsel, and all these things that kids want to put in their mouths, so maybe decorating the upper portion of a tree, when you have a small child,” said Kreuscher.
It’s also important to consider what’s going under the tree. “It’s important to make sure that you purchase age-appropriate toys for each child. When there are multiple children of different ages in that home, sometimes it’s better to go with a younger child’s age range than an older child because we don’t want an accident to happen,” she said.
Every toy has an age requirement listed somewhere on the box. Before buying a child a gift this holiday season, make sure it’s age appropriate.
If you’re traveling this holiday season, it’s also important to have your child’s car seat inspected. “Think about if you’re traveling to someone’s home, where is my young child is going to sleep?” said Kreuscher.
When baking treats and holiday meals, make sure children use caution around opened ovens and hot stoves. “Having the kids step back away from the stove so that there’s a safe environment for them and they don’t get themselves burned,” she said.
Just a few tips to keep your home and child safe this holiday season.
