Sprains, fractures, and concussions—doctors say they’re some of the most common sports-related injuries. “It’s really important to have a team physician on the sideline for prompt diagnosis. It’s also really helpful if physicians see the mechanism of injury,” said Dr. Christine Norton, a resident physician with Lee Health. While injuries can happen during any sport—Dr. Norton says concussions are more common in football, soccer, baseball, and lacrosse. “There are sideline evaluations that have been proven to help team physicians on the sidelines diagnose a concussion. We look at orientation questions, so we test the athletes for their memory before the event and after the event.” If a player returns to the game too soon after a concussion, they’re at risk for developing second impact syndrome. “If an athlete is hit in the head before a concussion has healed and the symptoms have resolved, they can get this syndrome which leads to brain swelling,” she said. To prevent other injuries during games and practice, it’s also important for players to wear the correct protective gear, including pads, mouth guards, and helmets. “Hydration is really, really important, especially in Florida where we see heatstroke,” Dr. Norton said. Stretching and warming before physical activity can also lower the risk for an injury---just a few ways to keep players safe and active.
