Sitting down and slumped over a computer—It’s the most common way many people spend their workday. “Most occupations and jobs now days tend to be sedentary. We tend to sit at a desk or in a building, and you’re not moving as much as you should,” said Dr. Alfred Gitu, a family medicine physician with Lee Health.
In fact, studies show, sitting is the new smoking. “Look for opportunities to be more active. If you can park your car farther away in the parking lot, try to do that. Those are extra steps that you would not have had otherwise,” he said.
When you get to work instead of taking the elevator, doctors recommend giving your body some exercise by taking the stairs. “If it’s possible you can either raise your desk or just find a way to work while standing because that changes the whole dynamic of how you operate and your body is healthier that way,” said Dr. Gitu.
Healthy meal prepping can also help keep you track at work and prevent you from eating sugary and processed snacks throughout the day. “At least once an hour, take a break and walk away from the desk. It keeps you physically engaged, but it’s also a wonderful break,” he said.
Finding ways to be active during the workday can keep you motivated to stay active after work. “If you’ve been sitting, your joints are sort of stuck together, and you don’t want to move, but if you’ve been moving at work then you’re more likely to move more when you go home,” Dr. Gitu said.
Making healthy choices at work can help you feel better and improve your overall health.
