Staying Strong with Osteoporosis - Orthopedics

It may sound simple—but spending just a few minutes a day walking can help to keep your bones strong—and keep you safe from an injury. “Every time you take a step, vibrations go up your body and help stimulate bone healing,” said Dr. Cesar Cereijo, an orthopedic trauma surgeon with Lee Health. “Osteoporosis is a prevalent epidemic that as the population grows in the country and the life expectancy grows it becomes a bigger and bigger problem.” A problem--doctors say can’t be cured, but can be managed through an active and healthy lifestyle. “The harmful part of it is if you do suffer a fracture, like a hip fracture, a wrist fracture, a spine fracture, it makes healing harder, and it makes your recovery more difficult,” Dr. Cereijo said. Osteoporosis is a disease where the bone density and quality are reduced. Over time, the bones can become more fragile increasing the risk of a fracture. “We peek at the max bone mineral density, so as strong as our bones can be, we peek at 30 years of age,” he said. For women, menopause can cause bone density to become brittle and weak—which is why doctors encourage supplements and exercise. “Vitamin D supplementation which is very important, we also talk about calcium supplementation,” said Dr. Cereijo. Maintaining a healthy diet, an active lifestyle, and taking necessary supplements can help to keep your bones strong and lower your risk for a serious injury.
