The Lift Project

It’s a project that’s changing the way people think about their day. “We are lying in bed, we sit up to eat breakfast, we sit to drive to work, we sit at work, we sit and drive home, we sit and eat dinner, and we lie down to go to bed,” said Cheryl Neal, Lift Project Leader with Lee Health.Lifestyle medicine Dr. Darren Morton created the Lift Project as an educational adventure designed to lift people’s moods. “During this ten-week session, we learn about the part of our brain that deals with emotions and the way you feel. This part of your brain is also in charge of your memory, your motivation, and many of our automatic body processes, including our immune systems,” explained Neal. The project uses the latest findings in positive psychology, lifestyle medicine, and neuroscience to help people live their best life. This is the first time for the internationally recognized program to be taught in the United States.“It’s just an awareness of simple things that you can do every day, and all of these things feed that part of your brain that controls your emotions and your feelings,” said Neal. Each week participants watch, listen, or read a lesson, then Dr. Morton challenges them to apply the principle to their week. “These are very simple principles that just bring your awareness to. He encourages you to spend 10 to 15 minutes outside each day. Positive thoughts, gratitude, and he give you simple little challenges that you can apply in your life to put these into practice,” she said.Lift Project leader Cheryl Neal then meets with the group at the Cape Coral Healthy Life Center to discuss applying the lesson to our daily lives.
